The Foundation of Everything We Do

A chiropractic adjustment — also called spinal manipulation — is the core of what Dr. John Nowak does. It is one of the most studied, most practiced, and most effective treatments available for musculoskeletal pain. And at Nowak Chiropractic, it is the starting point for every patient who walks through the door.

Dr. John has been performing chiropractic adjustments since 1980. That’s over four decades of hands-on experience with real patients dealing with real pain. He is not guessing. He knows what he is feeling for, what needs to move, and how to get there.

What Is a Chiropractic Adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is a precise, controlled application of force to a specific joint of the spine. The goal is to restore proper movement to a joint that has become restricted or misaligned — a condition chiropractors call a subluxation.

When spinal joints don’t move the way they should, the effects ripple outward. Muscles tighten to compensate. Nerves become irritated. Pain develops — sometimes at the site of the problem, sometimes in areas that seem unrelated. The adjustment addresses the mechanical cause of that cascade rather than simply managing the symptom.

You may hear a popping or cracking sound during an adjustment. This is completely normal and is simply the release of gas from the joint — the same thing that happens when you crack your knuckles. It is not bones breaking or grinding against each other.

What Chiropractic Adjustments Treat

Chiropractic adjustments are effective for a wide range of conditions rooted in spinal dysfunction. At Nowak Chiropractic, Dr. John uses adjustments as the primary treatment for:

  • Back pain — acute and chronic

  • Neck pain and stiffness

  • Headaches and cervicogenic headaches

  • Whiplash and auto injury recovery

  • Sciatica and radiating leg pain

  • Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

  • Sports-related back and neck injuries

  • Pregnancy-related back and pelvic pain

What to Expect During Your Adjustment

Before any adjustment is performed, Dr. John will conduct a thorough consultation and hands-on examination. He assesses your range of motion, identifies areas of restriction, and listens carefully to what you’re experiencing. The adjustment follows from that assessment — it is never performed blindly or applied the same way to every patient.

The adjustment itself takes only a few minutes. Most patients experience immediate relief or a noticeable reduction in pain following treatment. Some feel mild soreness afterward — similar to the feeling after a new workout — which typically resolves within a day or two.

New patients are treated at their first visit. You will not leave your first appointment without having received care.

Does It Hurt?

For the vast majority of patients, chiropractic adjustments are not painful. Most describe the experience as a release

— a sense of pressure followed by relief. Patients who come in braced for something uncomfortable are often surprised by how gentle and controlled the process actually is.

Dr. John’s approach is precise and deliberate. He has been doing this for over 40 years and patient comfort is always part of the equation. If something doesn’t feel right at any point, he adjusts his approach. Communication is always welcome.

Why Experience Matters

Chiropractic adjustments are a skill that deepens with practice. The ability to identify exactly which joint needs to move, in which direction, with how much force — that level of precision comes from years of clinical experience that no amount of classroom training can fully replicate.

Dr. John graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1980 — the founding institution of chiropractic care — and has been refining his technique ever since. He completed advanced coursework in spinal manipulation as recently as 2024, staying current with the best evidence on what works and why.

When you choose Nowak Chiropractic, you are not being adjusted by someone who learned the technique last year. You are working with a doctor who has performed thousands of adjustments on thousands of patients over four decades in the same South Buffalo community.

Ready to Feel the Difference?

If you have been dealing with back pain, neck pain, headaches, or any of the conditions listed above — and you have not yet tried chiropractic care, or you have tried it elsewhere without lasting results — give us a call. Dr. John will assess what is going on and get you started the same day.
